NFL Bets Made Simple: A Guide for New Football Bettors

Whether you are new to betting or just looking for a refresher course, this guide is the one for you. The NFL is not only the biggest sporting league in the USA but has also embraced football betting in the country. Here, we will explain the types of bets that you can place to better understand them. The three most popular bets have been detailed below.

The Point Spread

The point spread is a bet placed on the margin of the victory at the end of the game. In this bet, one team is favored as the winner and the other as the underdog. If the stronger team wins by a certain number of points, you win the bet. You can also win if the losing team loses by a specific number of points, or win the game altogether.

Assume the Cowboys (+6.5) are due to play the Giants (-6.5). How do you make sense of this? Firstly, the negative sign indicates that the Giants are the favorites to win, and the positive sign indicates that the Cowboys are the underdog. When you place a bet on the Giants, you win the bet, provided they win the game by 7 points or more.

If you placed a bet on the Giants, they don’t have to win for you to win the bet. If they lose, by less than 6 points, or win the game you’ll win the bet.

The Money Line

The money line bet is the simplest one. You simply place a bet on the team that you expect will win. Assume, that Dallas (-250) is playing the Giants (+150). Thismeans that apart from Dallas being the favorites to win, you will have to wager $250 to win $100. In the case of the Giants, the information is slightly altered. If you place a bet on the underdog, you would have to wager $100, to win $150.

If you choose to bet on the ‘total’, you are no longer concerned with who wins the game. Instead, the bet is based on the total score that is decided according to football match predictions. This bet is also known as ‘over-under betting’. Let’s say the sportsbook sets the total at 40.5. In this case, you would place a bet on whether the game would end with a score over 40.5, or under 40.5.
